District Meetings Remainder of 2008 events

Listed below are the remaining events for this year in the round of Child Protection Seminars, UMC Seminars and Chairmen’s Updates. The invitations to the Felixstowe and Newark events have already been sent out and the others will be sent out about a month in advance of each event.

A number of Units have asked if they can attend events that are outside of their District (as another Unit is closer) and this is possible, however please discuss with the BMD first.

Fire Checks

One of our Units conducted its check of fire extinguishers and discovered to their horror, that despite regular checks the extinguishers were in fact useless. They used the same company over a number of years and that company signed them off to say all was well, despite evidence that showed otherwise. The issue was resolved by purchasing new extinguishers, but the Unit could have been put in a very difficult position.

We rely on experts to carryout these tasks, but it is worthwhile checking that they are doing what they say they are, and in some cases charging Units a considerable amount for.

European City Guides

Please be aware that Units have been receiving forms asking them to confirm their entry into the above publications. By returning the form you are entering into a contract which attracts a charge just short of 1000 Euros. Whilst the guides might exist and be useful it is unlikely that they are of any use to Sea Cadets Units. It might be worth returning to sender or the shredder if you receive such an offer. Thanks to the Chairman of Ipswich Unit for details on this latest initiative.

UKBS Surveys - If your Unit has received a questionaire please return it asap to the BMD.

Insurance Premiums - Units should already have made arrangements to pay this years premiums. If you have not done this then please make your payment as soon as possible.

CRB Checks - Unit Chairmen will shortly receive an updated print out on volunteers who are disclosed. Please review the list and take action to ammend or rectify as soon as possible.

Electronic Office - The Area Office is moving over to a paperless office and this includes letters and information to Unit Chairmen. Please check your e-mail regularly to see if we have posted anything new to you.

Chairmen Pages now available for general viewing - The Chairmen's pages have previously been hidden, however due to changes in how EATMs are structured we can now make these pages available for general viewing.
